Goal’d

UI/UX Design
Service Design

Consider opportunities in the post-covid world that can make a better world based on what we learned from the pandemic. This university project was conducted with a team from Google Creative Lab as our mentors, providing feedback and guidance over a six week period.

The Spark

“I find myself working erratic hours – the option is there to do things later and do something else. So it does seem like I’m working late, more than I would in the office” - My Dad

The Problem

Through more in-depth interviews with my Dad and other relatives that WFH, and user research, it became evident that there is a lack of structure in the workday and separation between work and home life.

My Dad knows his biggest problem with WFH is working late, and he wants this to change but hasn’t taken action.

The Question : How might we help professionals set healthy work boundaries at home?

The Outcome

Goal’d is a goal-setting app that helps work from home employees improve their work/life balance by setting clear, actionable goals. Cemented in behaviour change science, Goal’d helps the user define their motivation, break goals down into small doable chunks and prompts them to keep it up through notifications.

Empathy Map + Profile

Based on the profile I created for my Dad and the interviews I did with him. The pains and gains identified (that I could control) became my criteria for success, and I checked my progress against these criteria to ensure I was on the right track.

User Scenarios

Based on the workday journeys of two people I interviewed, these scenarios explore how Goal’d would integrate into their day. This includes features I later axed (due to time constraints) such as activity logging, focus mode and next-day to-do list.

Information Architecture

A model of the app structure and how information is categorised.
It includes a ‘Coach’ section where the user would have a personal coach they could talk to for advice and to keep them accountable, but after feedback from my mentors, this feature was removed.

Behaviour Change Science

There are three core variables to change behaviour - ability, motivation and prompts - addressed in Goal’d’s main features. Motivation was a major pain point in my user interviews. To help users define their intrinsic motivation, I designed in ‘I want to be a person who...’ and ‘My Why’ statements, though the effectiveness of this would need to be user tested.

Value Proposition

To consolidate the value of Goal’d for users, I utilised a value proposition canvas. The statement I developed encapsulates the three key features, allows me to pitch my idea effectively and ensures that my design meets my user’s needs.

Advertising

Goal’d would be advertised primarily on digital platforms that WFH employees would frequent - especially platforms they might be procrastinating on work and life on. Examples include LinkedIn (as shown), Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.
